My Wee Solution
(No, I will not claim I have THE solution, but I do have a super simple one)
Let's remove ALL the stuff that doesn't matter. Let's filter our efforts through "the big picture", and let's instill the belief that it actually takes less than we're often led to believe to build and maintain strength and fitness. And these efforts do not have to be perfect, they just have to be consistent to some level.
One solution is the "do a little bit more frequently" (like 10mins a day), which absolutely can work for many people. The problem is, for other people, it can reinforce that you must do everything perfectly to "win". Inevitably, it becomes unsustainable because of the pressure to do it every day. Notice how I'm just saying this may be the case for some people. I'm actually one of those people.
After I had my daughter, I had to find a different solution. In the midst of chronic pain and depression, I really had zero mental or physical energy to do something high frequency. My goal of 3 workouts per week seemed doable, but each time I set out, I kept falling short.
Where had my mojo had gone?
So I decided to ask the question: "what's the least I can do to get results?".
You know what?
I started back to fitness doing ONE workout a week. Not a long one, a less-than-20-minute-one. It was enough to start building back strength, reduce the pressure to "do more", and build in success with a "almost impossible to fail" goal.
Fast forward over a year, and I am happy to report that I have successfully exceeded my goal and maintained a 2-3 workout per week consistency for that time. I have lost 25lbs, and I can move better - with less pain - than before I had my daughter.
Less is more. Keep it super doable, like ridiculously doable, and you'll not only start looking forward to your workouts, but you'll see results because you're being consistent!
Yep, when you boil it all down, consistency is the most important goal to nurture when you're struggling to stay on track, or if you feel like what you do is never enough.
